The last sixteenth of November, all the ESO classes went to the Centre Cultural theatre in Alaior to watch a play called “Taming Shakespeare” , an adaptation of the world known “La fierecilla domada” (“Taming of the Shrew”) At the beginning of the play the two characters asked for three girls and three boys to go up on the stage and they became different characters. They wore a costume and at some moments of the play they participated by acting with them. All of us enjoyed a lot because they had to improvise and there were some mistakes which were funny. Apart from that, the two actors were sometimes performing like a woman, so it made it even more amusing. The play started when William Shakespeare and his wife, Anne Hathaway, wanted to act their new performance. Anne wanted to be Kate and William was first Bianca and then Petruchio. Our friends were the three Bianca’s suitors, and the girls were Kate’s secretaries. During the play they put some popular songs, so the actors and all the people from our classes started to dance with them; it was really funny. They played songs like “Greased Lightning” and “Look at me, I’m Sandra Dee” from Grease. In the play, Bianca had three suitors who wanted to marry her, but she couldn’t because her sister had to find a husband before her. Kate was really bad-tempered so it wasn’t easy for her. Finally Kate met a man called Petruchio, or Pit, who wanted to marry her because of her money. When the wedding had been celebrated, everything changed because he wanted her to be more obedient, so he left her starving and kept her awake. When the play finished they weren’t in love but she was scared and submissive so they continued living together. We talked about the play before going to watch it and the teacher, Lina, made us think about women’s rights and the differences in relationships nowadays and 400 years ago. To finish this article we would agree in saying that we enjoyed going to the theatre.
